Around 100 A.D. the Romans had begun to use glass for windows in houses. Even so, for many centuries after it would not be globally used in this way. In the years leading up to the 17th century, England used animal horn to create actual windows. These were softened and cut into thin strips to lay out as windows. Before this, Chinese had been using paper strips to form their windows.
It is only around the 17th century that a French company, Saint Gobain, perfected a glass blowing technique that involved slitting and unrolling glass blown cylinders into almost flat rectangles. The glass was then ground and polished on both sides.
You may have seen in some older houses, bowed glass. This is the old method of making glass, invented by Saint Gobain, and it is still used in some settings to retain the character of a building. It does not however make for good insulation and does not create a fully clean finish, it may obscure vision when looked through.
In 1851, Joseph Paxton, as part of “The Great Exhibition” designed and built “The Crystal Palace” in Hyde Park. This was to display various examples of technology developed in the industrial revolution. This was the first use of sheet glass in construction and from then began to be used more frequently in building work leading on to today, where sheet glass windows are most commonly used in buildings.
This advances in technology have made glass production and application vastly more economical, and since Joseph Paxton’s Crystal palace, more and more people have designed and construction similar things. For instance, conservatories and summer houses are commonplace. They harness the sun, are great for winter and provide a perfect space to grow some more tropical plants.
Roofing Bars enable builders to use smaller panes of glass to make bigger windows. Roofing Bars are used in most of these structures.
