Mirrors Baverstock

Mirrors Baverstock

Mirrors have been used for thousands of years. In 1835 Justus von Liebig invented the modern mirror, but before that mirrors had actually been used in Turkey, Iraq and Egypt where they were sometimes made out of copper a fantastic mirror, but with a tinted colour. Another beautiful example of a material used as a mirror is Obsidian, a liquorice like rock that when highly polished is a surprisingly effective reflector, all be it a little dim. At other times, people would simply use a pool of water, but this provided a distorted view of oneself.
Justus von Liebig’s mirror was a sharp step up in the technology of mirrors. He discovered that when you apply a thin layer of metallic silver to glass, you get a brilliant reflective surface – a perfect mirror image of an object!
The superstition behind broken mirrors and having 7 years of bad luck, actually comes from Roman religion. They believed that the gods looked upon people through these polished metal surfaces and that were someone to break them, the gods would be unhappy with someone so careless and reign bad luck down on them.
If you have had the unfortunate experience of breaking your mirror, you needn’t fear the gods of the Romans. But perhaps you may fear your mirrorless state! With what will you gaze upon yourself now? Count Glass in Wiltshire are certainly the people you need.
